Project Description

The Emmy Noether junior research group at the Department of Physics, Osnabrück University, invites applications for the position of

Postgraduate Position (female/male)
in the field of nanosystems and magnetic molecules on surfaces
(salary grade E 13 TV-L, 50 %)

for a duration of 3 years and with the aim of gaining a PhD, to start as soon as possible.

Focus of the Emmy Noether junior research group is the preparation and characterisation of organometallic structures on surfaces of insulating substrates. These most promising materials are investigated in the context of novel information processing approaches, especially to test the concept of a quantum cellular automaton.

The material class will be extended to single molecule magnets as well as to organometallic structures and metal complexes with centres having a large magnetic moment (i.e. lanthanoides) in the context of a topical focus on spinsystems now pursued in cooperation with research groups in the Department of Physics at Osnabrück University. Specifically, at first a controlled structure formation of magnetic molecules on insulating thin films and bulk insulating crystals will be investigated, i.e. in the form of host-guest systems, and the resulting structures will be characterised. Ensuing, the combination of lanthanoides and suitable organic ligands will be exploited to form in-situ organometallic and complex compounds on surfaces.

A new, combined scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscope operated under ultra-high vacuum conditions and at low temperatures (5K) will be available for the project and allow for high-resolution imaging. Further complementary techniques can be applied in cooperation.

Description of responsibilities:
• Involvement in research with the aim of gaining a PhD
• Deposition and characterisation of single molecule magnets on insulating thin films and surfaces of insulating materials, i.e. in
form of host-guest systems
• Preparation of organometallic and complex compounds with spin centres, i.e. by incorporation of lanthanoides
• Characterisation via low-temperature scanning probe microscopy, especially by high-resolution atomic force microscopy
• Teaching duty (in German language) during term time of 2 hours per week

Required qualifications:
• Candidates are required to hold a M.Sc. or diploma degree in physics or in a related discipline with strong physical or physico-
chemical focus
• Good knowledge of the English language (written and oral)

Desirable qualifications:
• Experience with ultra-high vacuum technology and/or scanning probe microscopy

Funding Notes

The position is funded according to the pay scale of the State of Lower Saxony (50 % TV-L E13) for 3 years. There are no tuition fees. The start date is as soon as possible.
