Project Description

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Bath offers a full-time funded PhD studentship in Economics. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who is aiming to complete a PhD on an exciting research project that combines theoretical economic reasoning with real world application.

The lead supervisor will be Dr Maik T Schneider, Associate Professor at the Economics Department at the University of Bath and we will work in contact with the Swindon Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership who co-fund the PhD.

Project Outline:

Environmental protection is at the centre of public debates. At the heart of it is the interaction between environmental quality and materialistic economic prosperity. To make informed decisions in this nexus, it is paramount to know what the value of the environment actually is. A novel concept in this respect is called Natural Capital. It has been applied for the first time in Scotland and other areas such as Wiltshire are keen to baseline the value of Natural Capital as part of their work to develop their local industrial strategy leading to sustainable, inclusive growth.

This PhD project would involve critically appreciating this novel and emerging research about Natural Capital and developing a framework that seeks to improve, but is based on, the existing methods, especially on the one used for Scotland. The framework would then be applied to determine the baseline value of Natural Capital for the area of Swindon and Wiltshire, followed by a discussion of how it could be used to inform future policy decisions.

This project is for a PhD student interested in a well-defined project on a novel concept in Economics and applying it to an exciting real world case. The concept of Natural Capital will be increasingly used in the future as policy trade-offs between the environment and other economic goals will become ever more important. This project will provide a great opportunity to become an expert in this policy nexus, which can open excellent career paths in the academic as well as the private sector.

Application Criteria:

The ideal candidate should hold a Master’s degree in Economics or similar and should have

• an interest in Environmental Economics and an excellent grasp of Economic reasoning.
• an expertise in Data Analysis and
• be familiar with MS office, especially Excel, and ideally with a statistical software like Stata or R.
