Natural Language Processing Application to Multiple Problem Domains.

School of Computer Science

Applications accepted all year round Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

The emergence of Big Data, advances in Machine Learning and increase in computational processing power are used for developing many novel Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications for many computational linguistics problems. NLP bridges many subjects within Computer Science. Also, it links Computer Science to many other disciplines. NLP is used for finding solutions to many different problems that directly contribute to different aspects of our life. This has been achieved by applying NLP techniques to many different problem domains such as cyber security, finance and economy, business, health, humanities and social sciences and many more.

The aim of this proposed project is to explore and design novel approaches and methodologies for developing practical application of Natural Language Processing to one of the following subject areas: Data Mining and Data Analytic which will involve data collection, processing and analysis for a specific problems (e.g., financial/economic trend forecasting, health/medical data, social media analytics, sentiment analysis, author profiling etc.); Cyber Security (e.g., cyber bullying, online hate speech detection/classification, online grooming detection, hate crime prediction from big data etc.) and Human Machine Interaction (e.g., using natural languages as an interface to interact with machine/robots). For the above problems, we will use open-source data and investigate machine learning application for designing and implementing novel applications.

Funding Notes

This project is suitable for self-funded students with undergraduate degree or higher and strong motivation and commitment for research.
