The wings of a morpho butterfly show vivid blue colour because of the presence of periodic nanostructures. We have been developing photochemistries and materials to fabricate similar nanostructures made of hydrogels. Such nanostructured hydrogels present optical properties that may alter in response to molecules of interest offering opportunities for sensing.
The aim of this PhD project is to develop chemistry along with instrumentation required to fabricate and characterise optical nanostructures in hydrogels. Subsequently, the performance of the optimised optical nanostructures for sensing biomolecules relevant for healthcare diagnosis will be studied.
