About the Project

Global shipping accounts for 3% of the world’s carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions, and is predicted to rise to 17% by 2050 if not addressed. A PhD studentship is available from 1st October 2022 to develop nature-inspired surfaces to prevent fouling in marine environments, leading to the improvement of energy efficiency of submerged structures. The successful candidate will receive training to become an expert user of state-of-the-art surface fabrication, characterisation, and marine techniques. This international collaboration will involve travel to New Zealand in order to test the developed surfaces in real-world systems.  The project findings will feed into the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Clean Energy, Climate Action, and Life Below Water.

This 36 month fully-funded PhD project will be based in the Chemistry Department at Durham University. It will be supervised by Professor J. P. S. Badyal FRS.

Applicants should have a first-class or upper second-class Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials or a related subject.

Funding provided: Tuition Fees (home rate) and a stipend at standard EPSRC rate for 36 months.

How To Apply:

Applications should be made online via Durham’s on-line application portal:
