About the Project

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Science for Studying Science, Innovation and Entrepreneurship is looking for applicants for a PhD studentship in Data Science of Social Innovation, supervised by Dr Yashar Moshfeghi (Dept. of Computer and Information Sciences) and Dr Young-Ho Eom (Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics) at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK

=Project Description=
Data Science of social innovation is gaining increased practice, and scholarly attention, as one of the important directions of the field. This is due to the complexity associated with the social innovation and challenges involved in data acquisition. The PhD student will build novel data science techniques that harness the unstructured data on the Web for social innovation specific problems such as identifying and monitoring the relationship between various elements of social innovation such as project and actor over a period of time.

=Application deadline=
The application deadline is 31 March 2020. Applications will be reviewed when received, shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview on a rolling basis. We may consider the late applications but we will consider applications submitted until 31 March 2020 with priority.

=Requirements=
• Prior knowledge and/or willingness to learn advanced text-mining, information retrieval, machine learning and statistical approaches as well as the ability to conduct research with mixed method approaches blending data science and qualitative methods.
• Background in computer science (or related disciplines) with a first or 2:1 UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent and/or a Masters degree.
• Excellent analytical skills and a demonstrable aptitude to undertake research and develop into an independent researcher.
• Excellent written and oral English language skills (see the application page for minimum test scores if English is not your first language).
• Interest in the social study of science, innovation and entrepreneurship

o A brief description of your understanding of the topic as well as a particular research question you want to pursue on this topic (two pages or less).

• Copies of your Bachelor degrees, transcripts, or English language certificate (if necessary).
• Two academic references.


Funding Notes

The PhD Studentship will start in October 2020 and the duration of the project is 42 months.
The studentship will cover circa £5000 for tuition fee and a tax-free stipend circa £15000 per annum for 42 months.
This means that Home/EU students are fully covered during the duration of the studentship.
