About the Project

Mutations in synaptic genes are strongly associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. This project will focus on the role of NMDA receptors, many subunits of which have been implicated in autism and epilepsy.

Using a combination of conditional transgenic mouse lines and circuit-targeted in vivo delivery of viral / expression constructs, different NMDA receptor subunits will be manipulated in specific circuits. The impact on functional and structural circuit development, as well as neuronal excitability, will be addressed using electrophysiology, functional imaging, connectivity mapping and 3D imaging of cleared brain samples. The student will acquire expertise in many cutting edge techniques, and become part of the Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, a world leading department for developmental neuroscience, as well as an exceptionally supportive and collaborative environment.

Funding Notes

The fully funded studentships cover the following:

• Course fees (Home/EU rate)
• Stipend (approx. £21,450 per year)
• Contribution towards research costs, training and conference attendance.

Standard PhD entry requirements: Applicants should have a Bachelors degree with 2:1 honours (or Overseas equivalent). A 2:2 degree may be considered only where applicants also offer a Masters with Merit.
