New antimicrobial strategies for dental materials

Project Description

Oral bacteria can attach to many dental materials to form biofilms. In order to achieve long-term success of dental restorations, it is important to render dental materials with antimicrobial properties. Numerous chemical, physical and mechanical approaches have been used in clinic to prevent biofilm formation or treat dental materials associated infections.

The project aims at developing novel antimicrobial strategies by combining antimicrobial materials with other external stimuli e.g. light to deter oral biofilms formation in various dental materials, including orthodontic brackets and archwires, resin composites, cements, implants, adhesives and denture base. The project involves the formulation of material composition, microstructural and microbiological characterisation using a range of analytic and microscopic techniques such as XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, FTIR, LSCM and biofilm assays.
