New Fluorometric Assays for Drug Discovery and Plankton Respiration (MUNOZMU20SCIO)

Project Description

Applications are welcome for this PhD project in the School of Chemistry to work in the research group of Dr María Paz Muñoz in collaboration with Dr María Marín (School of Chemsitr), Prof Robinson (School of Environmental Sciences) and Dr García-Martín (Nationa Oceanographic Centre). The project aims to develop novel fluorometric assays that will overcome the drawbacks of, and therefore compete with, the commercially available colorimetric assays currently used to evaluate the potential of newly developed drugs, for cell viability studies and to study the respiration of marine organisms that are involved in climate mediation. The PhD student will be involved in the synthesis of novel fluorescent probes and the development of the biological assays in the medicinal and marine environment, towards commercialisation. The student will acquire a complete training in chemistry, including medicinal and marine chemistry, transferable skills and the knowledge to transfer academic ideas to industry.
