New nutritional strategies for improved vascular outcomes in double diabetes

  • Full or part time
  • Application Deadline
    Friday, May 31, 2019
  • Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

Project Description

The term double diabetes has been used to describe individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who are overweight and display features of the metabolic syndrome. These individuals are at higher risk of diabetes complications, thereby increasing diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. There are no established guidelines for the treatment of this group of patients, despite the documented increased risk of complications.

This programme of work will help to understand the role of diet and the impact of nutritional strategies on vascular complications in overweight individuals with T1D and will uncover other factors that may play a role in the adverse clinical outcomes in this population. The student will be part of a multidisciplinary team which has extensive experience in nutritional interventions and the clinical management of type 1 diabetes.
