About the Project

Recycling and re-use of materials are becoming ever more important to improve environmental outcomes for a more sustainable future. There is an excellent opportunity to join the growing research team of an EPSRC Manufacturing Fellow at the University of Sheffield. We are seeking a talented, highly motivated scientist with a passion for understanding how polymers work and sustainability who is determined to make a difference.

The PhD project will create deep understanding in new polymer networks with functional groups forming dynamic bonds, by correlating various mechanical and physical properties with polymer structure. New (nano)composites will also be investigated which enable these new polymers to perform specific functions.

The successful applicant will gain experience in a wide range of experimental and analytical techniques of an interdisciplinary nature in Chemistry, Materials Science & Engineering. The project gives the successful candidate the chance to work on fundamental science with industrial relevance where (s)he will learn skills appropriate for a career in academia or industry. They will be involved in collaborations across the University and could have the opportunity of interaction with Industry as their PhD develops.

Funding Notes

The PhD studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years
• The PhD studentship is available to a UK or EU applicant.
• Applicants should have a first or upper second-class degree at BSc level in Polymer or Materials Science/Engineering, or an MSc in a relevant discipline.
• All applicants should provide a CV with 2 references including a covering letter (maximum 1 side of A4) outlining their motivation, skills and experience.
