Next Generation Forensic and Incident Response Analysis Challenges

Project Description

This work will look at the state-of-the-art investigation challenges such as related to Tor Forensics, Memory Forensics, IoT Forensics, Triage, Image Forensics, and Cloud Forensics. These topical areas all relate to extracting understanding for real-time technologies, sometimes stealthily, and producing information useful for further analysis. Prior work includes accessing encryption keys from the memory of virtual machines via the hypervisor, and using that to decrypt encoded network communications to prevent information theft, as well as online forensic examinations of cloud-based file storage without the cost of downloading the whole store for local examination.

Academic qualifications
A first degree (at least a 2.1) ideally in Computer Science with a good fundamental knowledge of computer security and networking.

English language requirement
IELTS score must be at least 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components). Other, equivalent qualifications will be accepted. Full details of the University’s policy are available online.

Essential attributes
• Experience of fundamental computer science areas, including a background in computer security and networking.
• Competent in programming and software testing
• Knowledge of computer security methods, including the fundamentals of cryptography and encryption.
• Good written and oral communication skills
• Strong motivation, with evidence of independent research skills relevant to the project
• Good time management

Desirable attributes
A strong interest in information security, computer penetration testing, and an enjoyment in producing creative solutions.

Funding Notes

This is a funded position. The Home (UK/EU) rate of tuition fees will be paid, plus an annual stipend at the prevailing UKRI rate (currently £15,009). International students would have to pay the difference between the prevailing home and overseas rates of fees each year (details can be found here View Website)
