Next generation probiotics; using microbes to treat disease.

College of Medical and Dental Sciences

About the Project

Disturbance of the intestinal microbiome and antibiotic overuse is understood to contribute to the increased incidence of modern-day diseases, highlighting the importance of the intestinal microbiome in health and disease. Faecal Microbial Transplantation [FMT] is being investigated for the treatment of these diseases and we are now identifying the bacterial and biochemical bioactives that are associated with disease remission. As such, the overarching goal of our work is to create novel colonic delivery formulations that are able to protect and deliver complex and sensitive bioactives to successfully alter the intestinal microbial ecology in patients. We have strong collaborations with gastroenterologists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the University of Birmingham Microbiome Treatment Centre to facilitate in translating results to the clinic.

Techniques in this project:

- Bio-encapsulation formulation
- Microbiology
- Intestinal modelling
- Gene sequencing
- Molecular biology
- Microcomposite characterisation
