About the Project

Applications are invited from high calibre candidates for a three year, fully funded PhD project entitled “Next Generation Technologies for Real-Time Evaluation of Protective Suit Performance against Toxic Chemicals”. The successful candidate will be part of an inter-disciplinary team to design, develop and validate the use of a fully animated mannequin (equipped with an integral chemical sensor array), using a state-of-the-art exposure chamber supported by world-class analytical laboratories located near Salisbury, Wiltshire.

This fundamental work will establish a platform for future investigations into the mechanism of action and performance of whole-body protective suit systems and so is likely to have an international impact on future testing strategies, as well as advancing worker protection in the agricultural, industrial and emergency response sectors. The project will include aspects of chemical analysis, exposure monitoring, toxicology, electrical engineering, animatronics and computational mathematics, and so provides a unique opportunity to develop career-enhancing training and expertise across a wide range of STEM activities.

For further information on this project and details of how to apply, please contact Professor Chilcott ([Email Address Removed]). Interviews will be arranged on an ad hoc basis in response to strong candidates. Therefore, an early application is recommended.

Applicants must hold, or be about to attain, a first class or upper second-class (2:1) Honours degree or equivalent from a recognised institution or a Masters degree in a relevant STEM subject. The PhD studentship is open to UK and international students. The successful students will receive a standard stipend and have their tuition fees paid. Non-UK applicants will have to pay their own visa and travel costs.
