NIHR Global Surgery Unit PhD studentship

Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences

, Applications accepted all year round Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (GSU) is seeking a high calibre MD or PhD fellow to undertake research for patient benefit across its data and randomised trials portfolios. These will include the @COVIDSurg and @GlobalSurg cohort platforms, and the multinational randomised control trials portfolios. There will be an international aspect to all projects, that will include a focus on making surgery as safe as possible. More specifically, the project will revolve around recovery of surgery in the post pandemic phase through routinely collected data to a) assess the global impact and unmet need, and b) prioritise surgery for 2021-2025

Please visit for more information on the range of surgical research being done by the Unit currently.

You will join a fast paced, multidisciplinary, enthusiastic research team that is patient facing and works through wide collaborations. This post is well suited to surgical trainees, but we would welcome applications from a broad range of medical and non-medical applicants. We will be able to offer flexible start dates, aiming for Autumn 2020-Spring 2021. The post will be full-time and based within GSU at the University of Birmingham. If the candidate is interested, a clinical rota may be organised suitable to your level and skillset, and the post-holders will be encouraged and supported to apply for external fellowships.
