About the Project

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the NHS to adopt innovative ways of working at speed. One such innovation was the introduction of virtual wards, which allow patients to get the care they need in the comfort of their own homes. Implementing and expanding virtual wards is a major policy focus, as it is hoped that they will replace hospital stays and save the NHS money. However, they may be more resource-intensive and duplicate existing services and the evidence to support their introduction is lacking.

This thesis will examine the resource implications of virtual wards, with a particular focus on the workforce implications and the impact that virtual wards have on primary and community care workload and activity compared to caring for patients in a traditional hospital ward setting.

This topic could be explored using either qualitative or quantitative methods, and so would be suitable for candidates with training in quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have obtained at least an Upper Second class honours degree (or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to primary care research.
