Non-Funded Doctoral Studentship in Adaptive Nanostructure for non-Invasive Blood Pressure Monitoring

Project Description

Elevated blood pressure (BP) is the main cause of heart failure in the world. The common way to control hypertension is regular monitoring of the BP, and accordingly taking proper action in the right time. However, precise BP measurements are still done with an invasive inflatable cuff around the arm, which cannot be done continuously. The present project aims to revolutionize the paradigm of BP measurements by introducing a new pressure sensor concept based on 3D nanostructure. It relies on stray light as the driving source and visual inspection of the patient as the reading system. Such a concept can be used to develop BP sensor as a plaster with roll-to-roll fabrication methods. The resulting device can be attached to the skin of the patient to continuously monitor the BP through the pulses of the brachial artery without an inflatable cuff nor reading system.
