Full Project Detail

The move toward hybrid and electric road and rail vehicles relies on precise control of electric machines and drive electronics. Manufacturing tolerances and component wear can change the way these machines operate compared to one another, and over time. These uncertainties can reduce the machine’s efficiency, increasing energy wastage.
The traditional way to approach these uncertainties is to measure the system response and use a control algorithm to correct the actuator accordingly. This PhD project aims to construct a novel framework for understanding the uncertainty in these electromechanical drive systems, and to use this framework to identify innovative methods for controlling the system more effectively, thereby boosting efficiency.

This is a unique opportunity to work with Loughborough’s Control Systems Group, well-known for our innovative work on the ultra-reliable REPOINT track switch. You will have the full support of the academics and research staff in the Control Systems Group, and the benefit of close collaboration with industry partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Mechatronics Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Automotive Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: MATLAB, Simulink, modelling of electrical machines, hybrid vehicle engineering, control of non-linear systems, optimisation

Funding Notes

Please note that studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied to this project and other advertised projects starting with advert reference ‘WS’ for the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering.
If awarded, each 3-year studentship will provide tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and a tax-free stipend at the UK Research and Innovation rate. The UKRI stipend value for 2019/20 has not yet been announced but the value for 2018/19 was £14,777. While we welcome applications from non-EU nationals, please be advised that it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available. Successful candidates will be notified by 26th March 2019.
