About This PhD Project

Project Description

The University of Hull has invested significant resources into the development of next generation nano materials through the creation of a Directed Self Assembly cluster. The cluster combines the expertise of chemists and physicists to create novel materials through the fundamental approach of bottom-up self-assembly of nanomaterials and hierarchically structured nano-composites with synergistic property spectra. Target research areas are optical meta-materials and novel ultra-high performance thin films and composites. The PhD position advertised is directly involved in this research cluster and will be of multidisciplinary nature, whereby the student will work in a vibrant research environment, receiving training in organic and organometallic chemistry, nanomaterial synthesis and characterization of such systems. Within the cluster, the student will be working on the synthesis and characterization of novel nanomaterials which display chiroptical effects with a few orders of magnitude more than natural biomolecules. Further, the student will investigate the supramolecular assembly of such systems to create hierarchically structured metamaterials. The full optical characterization of the resulting materials will be investigated within the cluster at the Department of Physics and Mathematics utilizing their unique expertise in organophotonics. The PhD student will receive close supervision from experts in the fields of chemical synthesis, nanomaterial design and optical characterization.

In order to qualify for this scholarship you will require an undergraduate degree with at least a 2.1, or equivalent in a relevant subject.
Full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarships will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£14,057 in 2015/16) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependent on satisfactory progress.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.
