Project Description

Mercury’s magnetic field is unusual because it is very weak. To explain this, a stably-stratified layer is thought to be located deep within the planet, immediately above the convective region where the magnetic field is generated, and to filter out the magnetic field. However, very little is actually known about the fluid dynamics within the stable layer, so its effects on the magnetic field are highly uncertain. In particular, double-diffusive convection is expected to take place within the stable layer due to the opposing effects of the thermal and compositional stratifications. In this project, we will study double-diffusive convection in Mercury’s stable layer and explain how it shapes its magnetic field. We will model the stable layer using numerical magnetohydrodynamical models, which will be based on an existing code. The dynamics is influenced by the rotation of the planet and is nonlinear, so this project requires intensive parallel computations, which we will perform on the high-performance computing facilities available at Newcastle University.

Please note eligibility requirement:

  • Academic excellence of the proposed student i.e. first or 2:1 (or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities [preference for 1st class honours]); or a Masters (preference for Merit or above); or APEL evidence of substantial practitioner achievement.
  • Appropriate IELTS score, if required.
  • Applicants cannot apply for this funding if currently engaged in Doctoral study elsewhere.

Funding Notes

The studentship supports a full stipend, paid for four years at UKRI rates (for 2022/23, this is £17,668 per annum and full tuition fees.
