About the Project

Coventry University (CU) is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentship

Climate change is acknowledged as the most important global crisis faced by the human race, and the entire planet’s ecosystem. It will have widespread effects on health and human survival, resulting from extreme weather, altered patterns of disease transmission, dramatic changes to food and water supply and destruction of infrastructure. The provision of healthcare in this context will need to respond, though it is not clear how or in what way.

‘Healthcare without harm’ has become an important but complex mantra. Whilst the healthcare system exists to improve population and individual health outcomes, the healthcare system itself is a key source of greenhouse gas emission contributing to global warming. The NHS contributes more than 50% to all public sector emissions. As the largest workforce across the world, nursing will play an important role in tackling and responding to climate change. However, it is unclear the extent to which the profession and its members are engaged in this remit. This PhD will explore the role of nursing in relation to climate change and environmentally responsible healthcare.

Given the severe impact that climate change will have on population health, this PhD creates an important opportunity to develop a much better understanding of where nursing can make a difference both to the climate change trajectory, to the provision of environmentally responsible healthcare and in relation to specific populations affected by climate change. Four broad questions will provide initial scaffolding to the PhD:

1. What does the existing evidence base tell us about nursing activities in relation to climate change and provision of environmentally responsible healthcare in the UK?

2. Are there examples of nursing practices to support environmentally responsible healthcare from the wider worls that we can learn from and develop further?

3. What is the potential role and scalable impact that nursing can make in relation to climate change and environmentally responsible healthcare?

4. Where and how can evidence be mobilised most effectively within healthcare systems to effect the greatest effect?

In answering the above questions, the candidate will develop a deep and wide-ranging understanding of the existing evidence base regarding the nurse’s role in relation to climate change. Taking both a local and global perspective, a series of case studies could usefully be undertaken to gain real insight into current practices and activities to tackle and respond to climate change. The PhD is likely to require the adoption of a range of data collection methods, including survey and in-depth qualitative approaches. The culmination of early phases of data ollection and analysis might be the development of an intervention, piloting and evaluation.
