Project Description

Applications are invited from ambitious, self-motivated candidates with an interest in refining their skills in cell culture and imaging. The successful candidate will join the active multidisciplinary research group of Dr Debarun Dutta and Prof James Wolffsohn. This opportunity is open to UK and EU students who have at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree in a biological science or a related subject.

The PhD project will investigate the effect of various light sources on the ocular surface using an in vitro cell culture approach. Thus, the project will involve culturing tissues from the ocular surface and determining the effect (through imaging and assays) of different wavelengths of light (both Ultraviolet and Visible) compared to skin cells. The effect of the osmolarity of the medium (to mimic the dry eye environment) will also be investigated for future development and use of spectacle and contact lenses. Tear samples from clinical studies will also be analysed to assess changes in biological markers.

Aston University was ranked in 5th of 94 UK Higher Education Institutions for research in Allied Health Professions (REF 2014) and was ranked 1st for research environment. Additional information about research in the School can be found at Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Debarun Dutta at: [Email Address Removed].
