About the Project
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is the fruit of an innovative alliance between academic, government, and philanthropic institutions to contribute to the efforts undertaken by the international community to address the challenges in global health. It positions Barcelona as a leading hub in global health research on communicable, non-communicable diseases and their environmental determinants. ISGlobal is currently integrated by a total staff of more than 400 people and about 50 group leaders, each of them running an independent research line, organized in 10 research programmes. The programme of childhood and environment coordinates a large-scale longitudinal birth cohort study, the INMA Project.
Erasmus University Medical Center is the largest university medical centre of the Netherlands covering all specialities and is known for its high quality epidemiological and neuroscience research. The Department of child and adolescent psychiatry has a 30-year track of epidemiological research, and is one of the strongest centers in Europe of aetiological epidemiological research in the field of child psychopathology. This department leads the brain development section of two large-scale longitudinal birth cohort studies, the Generation R Study and the Generation R Next Study.
What We Are Looking for:
We are looking for a PhD student to join our young, dynamic teams in childhood and environment at ISGlobal and child and adolescent psychiatry at EMC In the framework of a new European ANSES project called EMBRYORAD (Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, other environmental factors, and development of the embryo and the fetus)
The Project:
The PhD will be on the association between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, other environmental factors, and development of the embryo and the fetus with a focus on the development of the brain using ultrasounds and structural and functional neuroimaging. To develop the thesis, the candidate will use data of three large European birth cohort studies, the Spanish INMA Project, the Dutch Generation R Study, and the Dutch Generation R Next Study.
The candidate will also coordinate the work with the third partner in the project, Télécom ParisTech from France. The candidate will gain skills in environmental epidemiology, neuroepidemiology, embryo and fetal development, birth cohort studies, and advanced epidemiological and statistical methods. The candidate will have a joint position between ISGlobal and EMC, spending one year and a half in each institution, and will receive the PhD degree from the universities of both countries.
Job duties and tasks:
- Collaborating with the data collection of the ongoing studies.
- Undertaking literature searches and keeping up-to-date with the relevant scientific literature.
- Collaboration with the study team and external specialists.
- Coordinate between the project partners.
- Participating in data collection, in particular in the ultrasound measurements, exposure assessment, and data cleaning.
- Drawing up analysis plans and creating data files including existing and newly derived variables.
- Conducting analysis and interpreting results.
- Drafting and revising original articles for publication in high quality journals.
- Disseminating findings at conferences, workshops, in high quality journals, and through the study website.
- Undertaking an educational training.
The main responsibility is to develop, undertake, and submit the thesis within the three-year period. The candidate will be expected to disseminate the results widely. The candidate will have some additional responsibility for coordinating the project within the three partners and for an aspect of the data collection and the data management.
Skills and experience
- MSc in epidemiology, public health, or related discipline is an advantage.
- Previous experience in the PhD topic is an advantage.
- Familiar with statistical analysis packages, preferably STATA and R.
- Some experience in processing and managing of complex data and large datasets.
- Experience in literature searches.
- Keen interest in environmental exposure and child psychiatry research.
- Motivated researcher capable of setting and meeting deadlines and delivering research outputs to the required standard.
- Strong organization and team-working skills.
- Professional attitude with attention to details.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in English and Dutch (written and spoken).
- Team player, yet capable of working autonomously, rational and critical thinker.
- Immediate availability.
Condition
- Duration: 3 years.
- Starting date: Feburary 2020.
