Open-path FTIR measurements of volcanic plumes

Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Applications accepted all year round  Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

This project focusses on the measurement of volcanic plumes using ground-based open path Fourier transform spectroscopy, a powerful technique which allows quantification of volcanic gases in volcanic plumes. This project will involve international field trips to active volcanoes. Results from this research will be used to constrain models of magma degassing, leading to novel scientific papers. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Physics or Geoscience, be familiar with radiative transfer and spectroscopy, and have the ability to program in Python.
