Optically active molecular nanostructures

Project Description

In this project molecular nanostructures for specific applications in biomedical sensing and optoelectronics will be studied. Therefore, atomic scale details of the molecular arrangement and the relationship between supramolecular structure and optical properties are investigated. To realize novel functionalities, light is both used as a control parameter for directing molecular self-assembly as well as a stimulus for photo-switchable molecules to change the functionality of molecular structures and monolayers.
X-ray scattering at laboratory sources and at international synchrotron light sources will be used to determine atomic-scale structure in real-time during self-assembly and during photo-switching. The experimental X-ray and also UV-vis spectroscopic data will be analyzed in the project. For modeling and prediction of the supramolecular structure and the structure formation machine learning (artificial neural networks) will be used among other tools. Experience in one or several of the following fields is advantageous but not strictly necessary: background in physical chemistry or physics, X-ray scattering, optical spectroscopy, preparation of thin films, data analysis, python programming, and machine learning / artificial intelligence. Besides research work, also limited teaching in the field of physical chemistry is required.

Funding Notes

Funding is secured for a project of up to four years. The minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement and according to the classification scheme is EUR 2196.80 gross/month. This minimum salary may be higher due to previous employment periods eligible for inclusion and other earnings and remunerations. The salary will increase in the fourth year.
