About the Project

Across the UK, specialist musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapists called First Contact Practitioners (FCPs) are being employed in new roles to provide the initial management of patients with MSK conditions in primary care to reduce General Practitioner (GP) workload. Keele researchers in partnership with regional FCP services have recently developed a Midlands FCP Template. As FCPs begin to use this new consultation template, there is a timely opportunity to investigate the following research questions:

1.   What are the current local and national methods/standards of FCP service data collection and reporting across the UK?

2.   How should the Midlands FCP template be optimised to improve the template's useability and acceptability?

3.   How should the Midlands FCP template be optimised to enable useful reporting/health intelligence that enhances FCP quality-of-care?

The student will review available information on how a good report in healthcare should look. The student will survey the FCPs and FCP leads to understanding how they collect information about their service and ask in interviews if they will accept and use the template. The student will interview the senior leaders from the FCP services and GP Surgeries to understand if they like the reports generated by the template and help improve the quality of care in the FCP service. The research team has a vast network with the FCPs for the interviews. This project will optimise the use of the Midland FCP Template and improve the quality of care nationally.
