Full Project Detail

The aim of this doctoral project will be to develop and prove a novel multi-sensor approach to characterisation of wastewater quality. The work will involve building apparatus, carrying out experiments and formulating methods of analysing the sensor data. The impact of the project will be in improved management of water use and reduction of effluent production in manufacturing, because the technology will make available real-time data not provided by current analytical techniques. Such a capability is urgently needed as water is a vital resource which is under increasing pressure globally due to economic development and climate change.

This project offers the opportunity to the successful candidate to contribute to our planet’s sustainable future, and to kick start a research or industrial career through gaining of experience and expertise in hot topics such as resource efficiency and the circular economy. The candidate will be a member of the highly respected Centre for SMART at Loughborough University, and benefit from the support and expertise of the academics, researchers and other doctoral students in the centre.

Funding Notes

Please note that studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied to this project and other advertised projects starting with advert reference ‘WSS’ for the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering.
If awarded, each 3-year studentship will provide a tax-free stipend of £15,009 p/a, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (currently £4,327 p/a). While we welcome applications from non-EU nationals, please be advised that it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available. Successful candidates will be notified by 30 September 2019.
