Building on recent breakthroughs in this area by our team (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2015, 137, 3265–3270) our aim is to discover enhanced photocatalysts that promote overall water splitting to produce both hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight. The project will involve the use of a unique robotic platform that will allow the testing of many hundreds of candidate materials, guided by computational input from colleagues in University College London.
Postgraduate research opportunity for ambitious candidates with at least a 2:1 degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science. Excellent students from a broad range of backgrounds with a strong interest in new materials are encouraged to apply.
This project in the Liverpool Materials Chemistry group involves the design and synthesis of new functional organic materials under an ESPRC Programme Grant that combines experimental work with computational studies and a strong collaboration with University College London. You will work in the new £68M Materials Innovation Factory in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities (https://www.liv.ac.uk/materials-innovation-factory/). The overall aim of the project is to discover new step-change functional materials to address specific societal problems, such as clean energy.

The award will pay full tuition fees and a maintenance grant for 3.5 years. The maintenance grant will be £14,057 for 2015/16.
