The architectural design and construction industry face an unprecedented urgency to develop innovative approaches to construction reducing its carbon footprint and environmental impact. The proposed research project builds on the hypothesis of the scalability of microbiological structures to deliver more sustainable construction. The aim of the proposed research project is to explore and understand the principles of bacteria growth and respective influencing parameters and integrate them into a design system to make these structures available for the design and construction industry. The successful applicant for the studentship would demonstrate the following attributes: Masters degree in a design related subject with a focus on parametric/computational design; interest in inter- and cross-disciplinary fundamental research; and interest in experimental research.
The Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University is pleased to announce the 2020 WSA Studentship, which will be granted to the strongest applicant responding to one of the three following research opportunities:
1. Design for Ageing: Developing new approaches to design intervention within UK housing, in support of positive ageing-in-place.
2. Mapping and Understanding Urban and Rural Fuel Poverty in Wales
3. Parametric design of bacterial biomaterial for construction
For those interested in applying, please see below for further details:
• Application deadline is 31st January 2020. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in mid to late February.
Applicants should apply to the Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture with a start date of April or October 2020.
In the research proposal section of your application, please specify the project title and supervisors of this project and copy the project description in the text box provided. In the funding section, please select ’I will be applying for a scholarship/grant’ and specify that you are applying for advertised funding from title of Parametric design of bacterial biomaterial for construction.
• Ensure that you provide ALL requested information (including research proposal, CV, references, proof of qualifications, passport/ID, personal statement etc.).

Cardiff University’s Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) is consistently ranked amongst the top schools of architecture in UK and Worldwide league tables and has been placed in the top 50 of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings for the past four consecutive years
The WSA also had 90% of its research impact judged as outstanding (4*) in the 2014 REF (Research Excellence Framework). This placed us at the top of the table for impact in the assessment sub-panel for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning.
The distinctiveness of this School lies in its tradition of combining creativity with the understanding needed to realise designs through practice, its reputation for high quality research, the calibre of its staff and in its unique location in a friendly, liveable and affordable capital city that is a gateway to the stunning landscape of Wales.
The School has ambitious growth plans in place, which includes reinforcing our PGR community. At present the WSA is home to circa 75 students; an international cohort engaged in a diverse range of research endeavours within the built environment. Students are fully integrated within the school’s recently reformed research and scholarship groups, as well as the wider teaching community, and have access to further facilities and training through the university’s Doctoral Academy.
