Description of Project
PhD candidates in the areas of peer-to-peer energy trading, industrial demand response or cyber-physical energy systems are being recruited.
Peer-to-peer energy trading is an innovative paradigm for future energy systems with a high penetration of distributed energy resources, enabling direct energy trading among prosumers. Specific research topics include market designs, trading platforms (e.g. blockchain-based platforms), supporting network and ICT infrastructure and energy policy.
Industrial demand response is to utilise the flexibility of industrial plants to participate in the energy markets and provide ancillary services for energy systems. Specific research topics include modelling and optimisation of industrial production processes as well as local generators and energy storage for demand response.
Cyber-physical energy systems are characterised by the seamless integration of computational and physical components with intelligent control. Specific research topics include advanced communication technology supporting peer-to-peer energy trading, artificial intelligence and digital twins for demand response, and cyber security and resilience of energy systems.

The Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) is a multidisciplinary engineering research group with international expertise in both the supply and transmission of energy, which has 1 Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, 2 IEEE Fellows and 11 academic staff.
Training and Development Opportunities
A variety of training and development opportunities will be provided at different layers, aimed at various aspects of personal development, such as research skills, funding proposal writing, communication skills, dissemination skills, commercialisation training, etc. CIREGS will also provide appropriate funding support to the training and development needs identified by the student.
Candidates should hold a good bachelor’s degree (first or upper second-class honours degree) or a MSc degree in a relevant engineering/science subject.
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
