About the Project

Ph.D. Position in Sustainable Polymer Chemistry and Catalysis

Department of Chemistry Freie University Berlin (Germany)

Starting Date: 2023 (flexible), TV-L E13 67%.

The group: We are a synthetic chemistry group with focus on polymer synthesis and catalysis. Our interests are centred on finding new ways to incorporate functional main group atoms into polymers, turn waste products such as CO2 into valuable materials and understand the underlying catalytic processes that achieve these goals. The projects in our group range from synthetic inorganic chemistry synthesising new catalysts over reaction kinetics and intermediate characterisation to exploring the material properties of our new polymers. The methodologies we are developing also deal with the challenge to achieve sequence controlled polymers from complex monomer mixtures. With these approaches we want to contribute to a more sustainable and circular polymer economy.

The offer: The Ph.D. project (3.5 years) will focus on the preparation of transition metal and main group containing compounds and their application in polymerisation catalysis. Mechanistic investigations will give fundamental understanding of the underlying processes and help to optimize our methodologies. This will be followed by material and degradability tests in collaboration with the „Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung“ of the obtained polymers. We prefer to discuss the exact project personally with the most promising applicants and adjust the direction of research depending on the candidates’ interests.

What we are looking for: You should have experience in catalysis, synthetic and/or polymer chemistry. Experience with inert gas techniques and common characterisation methods (such as NMR, chromatography and XRD methods) is beneficial. You should also be open to learn many new methods for the characterisation of polymeric materials and be motivated to work in an international and social research team.

Application: Applications are invited from people who hold a M.Sc. or an equivalent degree in chemistry. Please send your application including a CV, academic transcripts, a cover letter stating your background, motivation and interest in a single PDF file to Dr. Plajer (plajer(at)zedat.fu-berlin.de). Please don’t hesitate to contact us in advance if you have questions. We are looking forward to your application!
