About the Project

The Neuroscience Ph.D. program at the Roskamp Institute, Inc., in Sarasota, Florida, has an opening for a Ph.D. project in the field of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research, as outlined below:

The project will examine the role of brain vascular mural cells in traumatic brain injury (TBI) pathophysiology. Mural cell disruption within the brain vasculature is a common feature of many neurodegenerative disorders, and the loss of these cells may explain the pathogenic features of these disease states. In our prior studies, we observed a progressive degeneration of cerebrovascular mural cell density in our mouse model of repetitive mild TBI (r-mTBI). Importantly, the mural cell perturbations observed following r-mTBI coincided with an accumulation of pathogenic tau species in the brain, white matter regression, and persistent neuroinflammation.

The goals of this PhD student project are:

1) investigate white matter differentiation and remyelination following r-mTBI,

2) evaluate tau degradation and tau elimination in the r-mTBI brain,

3) examine pericyte-mediated neuroinflammation following r-mTBI, and

4) determine the effect of pericyte stimulation on r-mTBI pathophysiology and cognitive behavior.

The techniques associated with this PhD student project are:

·       Immunoblotting

·       ELISA

·       cell culture

·       isolation of brain vasculature

·       microscopy

·       immunohistochemistry

·       degradation and activity assays

·       cell-specific isolation and culturing

·       delivery of TBI to mice

·       intracranial administration of molecules in mice

·       neurobehavioral analyses

·       blood and tissue collection from mice

The Roskamp Institute, Inc., is a vibrant biomedical research organization in Sarasota, FL, that is focused on understanding the causes of, and developing treatments for, neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions including Alzheimer’s Disease, Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. The multidisciplinary and multicultural Institute includes basic, translational and applied research.
