Project Description

Do you want to work with New Zealand’s leading electronics company, gain industry experience and get a PhD?

We offer the opportunity to undertake research towards a PhD in the area of quartz resonator technologies for the telecommunications industry. The project will be in collaboration with Rakon Ltd., one of New Zealand’s leading technology companies that designs and manufactures frequency control solutions for global markets. This opportunity would suit a highly motivated high achiever who is able to bring an understanding of chemistry, physics or materials science to experimental work at the micro and nano-scale to solve real industry questions.

Rakon has a history of innovation in the telecommunications sector and the Robinson Research Institute in the Faculty of Engineering Victoria University of Wellington has worked closely with Rakon on their next generation technologies. The goal is to create miniaturized resonators with the frequency stability required for 5G mobile communications and beyond.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Natalie Plank, School of Chemical & Physical Sciences and Princial Investigator in the MacDiarmid Institute and by Dr Nick Strickland, Senior Scientist, Robinson Research Institute. Based at Robinson Research Institute, Victoria University of Wellington, this project will also require working with researchers at Rakon Limited, Auckland and may require travel to use experimental equipment in Australia.
