Overview
This studentship is part of the project Rome Transformed: interdisciplinary analysis of Political, Military and Religious regenerations of the city’s forgotten quarter C1-C8 CE (RomeTrans), funded through an ERC Advanced grant awarded to Professor Ian Haynes at Newcastle University.

The successful applicant will work with archaeologists, historians, topographers and geographers to assess the comparative cost and economic impact of major construction projects in transforming the environment of the Eastern Caelian over eight centuries.

Major structures included in the PhD will include the Horti (lavish suburban residences), key military installations, such as the Castra Nova of the Imperial Horse Guard, aqueducts, the Aurelian Wall, the Sessorian Palace and the world’s first Cathedral at the Lateran. The relevance of transformations within Rome’s built environment to wider economic questions will also require the study of markets, shop spaces and access routes. As part of the research programme, the student will also work with the project team’s geomaticians, structural archaeologists, archaeological geophysicists and visualisation specialists to integrate their data into the RomeTrans GIS and to produce visualisations of the changing rural, sub-urban, and urban landscape of south-eastern Rome.

Eligibility Criteria
Essential: A high 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in archaeology, ancient history, topography or a related subject area. A Masters degree (merit or distinction) in a relevant subject area to be completed before starting the PhD. Experience of computer modelling, handling spatial data and quantitative analysis.

Desirable (but not a requirement): Knowledge of Italian and Latin. Language classes will be available in both languages for those who require them.

If English is not your first language we require you to meet the following English language requirements: Direct Entry: IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.5 in writing, and 5.5 in all other sub-skills).
