PhD in Chemistry - Electrochemical routes for carbon dioxide capture, reduction and use in electrosynthesis

Project Description

Candidates are invited to apply for a fully-funded 3.5-year PhD studentship in the Symes Group at the School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow (www.symeslab.com). The vacancy is open now, to start in October 2020. The work will include aspects of organic chemistry, electrochemistry and chemical engineering. Candidates should hold (or expect to hold by the start date) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem or equivalent in a relevant discipline (chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, etc.), although detailed knowledge of specific techniques is not essential. Above all, candidates will be highly motivated and independently-minded, and should be able to demonstrate the ability to learn new skills in a research environment.

This research project will examine the capture of carbon dioxide and its conversion to small molecules of industrial importance (e.g. fuels and commodity chemicals) by a combination of chemical and electrochemical approaches. Furthermore, the project will also explore the electrochemical conversion of these small molecules to species of higher value via electrosynthesis. The research project is thus highly interdisciplinary, at the interface of organic chemistry, electrochemistry, materials and engineering, and with the potential to have a major impact on more sustainable routes to chemical production.

Funding Notes

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK applicants for 3.5 years, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (currently £15,245 for Session 2020-21).
