This project will take advantage of a new world-leading electron microscope at Cardiff University, in order to determine the atomic structure of nanoparticles in three dimensions.
The Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI) has recently been awarded funding for an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope that is able to resolve individual atoms within a wide range of materials (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/news/view/2477653-award-drives-collaboration-across-research-hub).
This microscope is due to be operational in the spring of 2022.
In this project, the candidate will develop methods for three-dimensional imaging of metallic nanoparticles. The methods employed will include electron tomography, atom counting and single particle reconstruction. The aim of the project will be to develop robust workflows to image the exact 3D location of every atom within a nanoparticle, which will then be employed to study nanoparticles used for a range of industrially relevant catalytic reactions. Determining the precise atomic structure of the surface of nanoparticles is key to understanding their catalytic properties. In the later stages of the project, the candidate will apply the developed techniques to monitor the atomic structure of nanoparticles while they are in reactions conditions, i.e. under elevated temperatures and exposed to gaseous environments.
