About the Project

Highly motivated and ambitious candidates are invited to apply for a fully-funded PhD studentship in the Miras Group at the School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow (https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/chemistry/staff/charalamposmoiras/ ). The vacancy is open now, to start in October 2022, although an earlier start date is possible. The work will include aspects of self-assembly, polyoxometalate, coordination chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical, structural and surface characterization. Candidates should hold (or expect to hold by the start date) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem / BSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline (chemistry, materials, etc.). Practical experience in inorganic synthesis is expected. Experience in catalysis and supramolecular chemistry is desirable. Above all, candidates will be highly motivated and independently-minded, and should be able to demonstrate the ability to learn new skills in an interdisciplinary research environment.

We have recently been developing molecular catalytic species to produce useful products with particular interest in energy applications. The fine structural control and stabilisation of potential intermediates is crucial for the functionality and specificity of the catalytic process. The project will develop general protocol for pore and cavity functionalisation of porous materials ranging from molecular cages and MOFs to porous molecular metal oxide capsules by careful investigation of the fundamentals of modulated self-assembly, while scoping out the potential applications carefully designed molecular hosts in small molecule activation and highly specific heterogeneous catalysts. Specifically, we will use self-assembly protocols to generate highly functionalised molecular hosts with a range of topologies which can accommodate chemically stable molecular catalysts, and correlate structure-property relationships. The most promising materials will be explored further for tailored catalytic and energy applications, in collaboration with a network of experts. The research project is thus highly interdisciplinary, at the interface of inorganic/organic chemistry, materials and engineering, with the potential to have a major impact on the development of functional materials.

Funding Notes

Funding is available for 3.5 years to cover home tuition fees and a stipend at the Research Council rate (estimated £15,840 for 2022/2023) for UK nationals (or EU residents that have settled status in the UK).
