About the Project

Project Overview

Highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for a fully funded 3.5 year PhD position at the International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM), WMG, University of Warwick, UK.

The accumulation of plastic wastes in the environment has raised significant concerns about plastic production globally and stimulated the rapid development of bioplastics, in particular biodegradable bioplastics. Most commercial biodegradable polymers, such as PLA, PHB or PGA are mechanically brittle and humidity sensitive, their structure and properties are highly affected by the composition and processing history. The molecular structure design, chemical and physical properties of bioplastics need to be well understood before they can be manufactured into useful and sustainable bioplastic products.

The aim of the project is to develop high performance biodegradable polymers through phase morphology, crystallinity control and processing technology. The PhD project will involve polymerisation and melt-processing techniques. A wide range of advanced analytical methods including GPC, NMR, SAXS/WAXS, XRD, electron microscopy and thermal analysis will be employed. Full training will be provided to develop the interdisciplinary research skills.

A highly motived candidate with a solid background in polymer science, characterisation and/or polymer processing is highly preferable. By joining the research group, you will be well situated to learn new synthesis skills, access to excellent facilities for polymer synthesis, characterisation and processing, as well as communicate with excellent polymer researchers in the group. You will also have regular meetings and interact with the industry sponsor.
