Project Description

Evolutionary biology is underpinned by models for the evolution of species and their traits. The growing body of phylogenetic information, as well as increases in computational power allows us to develop and test novel models and theories of evolution. Our work has developed computational models for the evolution of interactions between species, as well as for spatially and temporally varying rates of evolution. We apply these models to understand adaptive radiations as well as for forecasting species’ responses to changing environments. Training includes developing skills in programming, statistics and data management.

The Department of Animal and Plant Sciences is home to world experts in phylogenetics, comparative methods, sexual selection and sexual conflict, ecological immunity, cooperative behaviour, population genetics, the evolutionary genomics of adaptation and evolutionary developmental biology. The department also hosts the NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility, which trains researchers in state-of-the-art molecular genetics techniques and is one of the largest Molecular Ecology laboratories in the UK.
