Overview
We invite applications from outstanding and highly motivated students for a PhD Studentship in Physics at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics (https://bit.ly/2S8SZzK) at Newcastle University. The successful applicant will join Dr Docampo’s team which performs experimental research at the intersection of physics, chemistry and engineering on hybrid perovskite materials with applications in solar energy conversion, computing and photonics.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have received unparalleled research interest in recent years as a result of their remarkable properties for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. This technology combines power conversion efficiencies on par with silicon with solution processability, i.e. they can be printed. Particularly, our industry partner, Power Roll, has developed a novel ultra-low-cost and lightweight substrate platform that can be produced at a fraction of the cost of established commercial solar technologies. Here, the current bottleneck is centred around understanding the effect of the developed charge extraction layers at the interface with the perovskite absorber on the device stability and performance. Thus, this project will be centred on their characterisation, with a particular focus on understanding the effects of ion accumulation at charge extraction layers which critically affects the device stability, charge extraction efficiency and overall device performance. This studentship will focus on the surface properties of the charge extraction layers employing advanced x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the University’s NEXUS facility as well as fully characterising the deposited perovskites with our structural characterisation suite. The studentship will also focus on understanding the degradation mechanism of the devices, combining in-situ x-ray diffraction with charge recombination characterisation and ex-situ analysis of the degraded interfaces.

Eligibility Criteria
You must have or expect a First Class or high 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in physics, engineering, materials science, or closely related disciplines. Enthusiasm for research, ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are essential requirements.

This award is available to UK/EU and international candidates. If English is not your first language, you must have IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills).
