Overview
Recent years have seen a growing use of immersive visualization. Researchers quickly established that immersivity was not enhancing existing visualization metaphors but was addressing specific challenges. It is commonly established that immersive visualisation enables situated analysis, spatial data and spatial task, collaboration, and presentation. However, the perceptive and interpretative processes behind these tasks are not well defined. Understanding what lies behind them will enable the VR and visualization research communities to improve the understanding of current visualization technics and identify additional perceptive and interpretative features or biases that could lead to new visualization metaphors.
This PhD topic will try to address the question of how people perceive an interpret information in immersive environment. This ranges from identifying the perceptive property of motion parallax, stereoscopy, and depth perception to evaluating the interpretative potential of ecological design. The goal of this research is to be able to identify the perceptive and interpretative features that enables immersive visualisation, understand their functioning, and identify their biases.
