Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in Composite Materials at WMG, the University of Warwick. A recent UK Materials Landscaping Study identified composites as the second largest manufacturing sector in the UK after steel, followed by plastics. In addition, high volume manufacturing of thermoplastic composites has been identified as critical for the future of lightweighting in automotive, aerospace and rail applications.
This project will focus on structure-processing-property relationships in both long- and short fibre composites and their hybrids. The work involves both an experimental and numerical programme and aims to develop high-volume manufacturing processes for structural thermoplastic composites that display an optimal balance in processing and mechanical properties. The project will address aspects related to process modelling, property prediction and recycling of thermoplastics composites.
The PhD student will work with leading academics on an industrially-relevant research project, alongside WMG’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult Centre and a network of industrial partners from the composite supply chain (including leading automotive companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, offering excellent career opportunities following graduation).
DESIRED STUDENT BACKGROUND:
This is an exciting opportunity for talented individuals with a first-class or upper second-class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as engineering, material science or physics. Applicants should be self-motivated and capable of working independently. They should also have good communication skills for regular interaction with other stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have:
-A minimum 2.1 undergraduate (BEng, MEng, BSc) and/or postgraduate masters’ qualification (MSc) in a science and technology field: Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Computer Science. -A successful candidate should have good experimental and analytical skills, knowledge or experience in materials processing and materials characterisation are desirable.
