About the Project

The interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1052 “Obesity Mechanism” investigates the complex mechanisms underlying the development and impact of obesity on health and metabolism based on three central research questions:

What role does the central nervous system play in the development of obesity?

What changes in adipose tissue contribute to secondary diseases of obesity?

Which signals from the adipose tissue lead to type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases?

In our research group, we focus on the investigation of proteins and molecular mechanisms underlying or contributing to obesity and its comorbidities. In particular, we are interested in the physiological functions of proteases and serpins expressed in adipose tissue and their role in pathological processes related to obesity, inflammation and insulin resistance. Research focuses on (patho)biochemical changes in adipose tissue and other organs. Structural biology work focuses on the fundamentals of serpin protease recognition, heparin and cofactor binding, post-translational modifications, and identification of additional target proteases and their substrates. In parallel, we investigate serpin functions in adipocytes and adipose tissue, macrophages, liver or brain, using cell cultures and various obesity and diabetes animal models.

The Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG) is an integral part of the CRC1052 and ensures the qualification of the doctoral students working in the CRC as well as other associated doctoral students.

The goals of the IRTG are to give a profound overview of current research in the field of obesity; to get the doctoral students acquainted to methods and techniques applied in the CRC subprojects; to teach the students practical and transferable skills in order to equip them for a successful career.

The IRTG represents a truly international program and benefits from an excellent scientific environment and a state-of-the-art research infrastructure. Students will profit from tailor-made teaching curricula, international networking opportunities including an exchange program, and close mentorship while performing cutting edge research projects at the interface of basic and clinical science. Your qualifications

Ideal candidates should hold (or be in the final stage of) a master's degree or an equivalent first professional qualification degree in the Life Sciences (e.g. in Biology, [Bio]Chemistry, Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, or Pharmacy) and be proficient in English.

This position also provides the opportunity for you to build specialist knowledge and collect significant professional experience, both of which will help advance your scientific career. Remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective wage agreement for public-sector employees at federal level (EG 13, 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of granting an allowance amounting to 15% if the necessary conditions are fulfilled. The position is (initially) limited to three years, but under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.
