A fully funded PhD studentship is available in the group of Dr. Pike at the University of Birmingham in area of synthetic organic chemistry focused on the development of a new range of adaptive oligomers for catalysis.
Synthetic oligomers1,2 have been employed for a range of applications including catalysis. The development of oligomers that can demonstrate responsive behaviour are highly sought after as they have the potential to regulate these applications, for example, by switching on or off catalysis. The aim of this PhD project is to develop a new range of responsive synthetic oligomers that can adapt their molecular properties in a highly controlled manner, in order to achieve control of their function, which will be employed to switch off and on catalysis.
Training:
This interdisciplinary project offers the opportunity to receive training in a variety of techniques, spanning the fields of organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. The student will receive in-depth training in a wide range of standard and advanced synthetic organic chemistry techniques and supramolecular self-assembly processes. During the course of this interdisciplinary project, the student will also receive training in a diverse array of analytical techniques including NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction.
Candidate Selection Process:
• You should hold or expect to receive a good (1st or 2.1 UK or equivalent) degree in chemistry and be eligible to pay tuition fees at the UK rate.
• Candidates should have an interest in or experience in synthetic organic and/or supramolecular chemistry
• Applicants should submit a PhD application by 23rd June 2021
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Sarah Pike ([Email Address Removed]) in the first instance by email, attaching an up-to-date CV.
Anticipated Start Date: October 2021
