Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Particle physics is entering a new era of super-precision measurements, with the LHC’s highest-statistics data-taking run to start during this PhD programme. In the absence so far of direct detection of new particles beyond the Standard Model (BSM), attention is shifting to precision measurements of collision event structures in which BSM physics may exhibit more subtly. In this project you will work at the forefront of this area, designing new precision observables for maximal sensitivity to indirect new-physics effects. Doing this efficiently requires innovation in how both BSM physics model parameters are explored and how measurement uncertainties are accounted for, demanding use of novel sampling and machine learning methods.
This project may be either purely phenomenological or contain an experimental component as a member of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The PhD programme is fully funded for 4 years as part of the ScotDIST Centre for Doctoral Training in Data-Intensive Science (https://www.scotdist.ac.uk/) and will be held in in the Schools of Physics & Astronomy at University of Glasgow, in collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews. The CDT training extends standard PhDs with a total 6 months of industry placement with data-science partners, and additional academic training in data science and artificial intelligence.
Please note the project will only be advertised until a suitable applicant is found. Applicants are therefore encouraged to submit their application asap.
