About the Project
The Social Decision Lab at The University of Sussex (Brighton, UK) is pleased to announce it will be supporting PhD applications this year. Our lab studies social rewards, social influence, altruism, risky choices, and emotional processing (including embodied cognition) using behavioural, computational, neural, pharmacological and physiological methodology. We are inspired by work in psychology, economics, anthropology, sociology and neuroscience. A student will receive training in all aspects of their PhD and be championed in their career development.
If you would like to do research that makes discoveries about how social cognition works and makes the world a bit better, get in touch with the lab PI, Dan Campbell-Meiklejohn ([Email Address Removed]) in the first instance. Send your CV and a short (250 words max) statement of your interests. If we have the right fit, you will be supported in your application for school-funded and ESRC-funded studentships. Both studentships cover EU/Home fees and stipend (international students must fund the difference between international and home/EU fees). Deadline for the full applications for these studentships is January 20th, 2020.
Why us? Our lab studies uses many methods in your training and our research environment is rich. We have a wonderful collaborative neuroscience network, two research MRI scanners with PhD MRI scanning funding available, and dedicated behavioural and pharmacological testing space. We have psychophysiology, EEG, and TMS facilities. We rank high in UK research universities with particularly strong ratings on impact. Our university-wide network includes world leaders in the study of international development, consciousness, memory, attention, learning, interoception, addiction and clinical research. Brighton is a wonderful, dynamic, progressive and colourful place to spend your graduate training (and 50 minutes on a train from the centre of London). All PhD graduates from the lab have gone on to work in postdoctoral positions in prestigious institutions or obtained independent fellowships.
Note that other than the studentships above, if you can secure half the funding for a PhD studentship from an organisation, we will match that funding to so you are fully funded, on acceptance to the PhD program. There is no deadline for this route.
