Introduction

Jožef Stefan Institute is the leading Slovenian scientific research institute for pure and applied natural sciences and technology. The Department of Communication Systems, where the candidate will be hosted, has more than 30 years of experience in research and development in wireless communications, embedded and sensor systems, information security, data protection, and privacy. The department has an excellent research infrastructure and a long history of participation in EU-funded projects from FP4 and participation in more than 15 H2020 projects, including 3 active Horizon EUROPE projects.

Presentation

SensorLab (https://sensorlab.ijs.si) at the Department of Communication Systems is seeking a PhD candidate to conduct research in AI management for smart infrastructure systems, focusing on developing AI-enabled solutions that optimize efficiency, effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. The candidate will gain independence as a researcher and produce a thesis consisting of at least three high-quality research papers targeting top outlets in the field, shaping their career to meet the demands of academia and industry.

The successful candidate is expected to enroll at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School and will be co-supervised by Dr. Carolina Fortuna and Dr. Jernej Hribar. 

Job Information

Expected start date in position: Oct. 2023 / can be adjusted upon agreement

Contract: The contract will cover up to 4 years full-time employment with yearly extension subject to successful progress in PhD study. The starting salary corresponds to category H017001 (1.815,99€ monthly gross) + daily commute and contribution to lunch costs. (~150€ net). Bonuses up to 20%, after the first year of PhD.

Your Responsibilities

As part of this position, you will engage in innovative research with the goal of publishing in leading academic journals. A significant portion, at least 75%, of your time will be devoted to the research required for your doctoral thesis. The remaining time will be allocated for mentoring students and carrying out administrative and project-related tasks. Additionally, you will be expected to attend regular team meetings, present your work to the team, supervise student projects, and contribute to the team's GitHub repository.

Your Qualifications

To join our team, we are seeking individuals with the following skillset:

  • Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, telecommunications or related field. Preferably with knowledge of machine learning or data science.
  • Experience and strong abilities in data analysis and programming languages such as Python or R.
  • Strong understanding of AI and machine learning concepts.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Open to learning various research methods including statistical analysis, experimentation, surveys, qualitative methods, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
