About the Project

This PhD project will be carried out in the newly established group of Theoretical and Computational Biophysics led by Dr. Roberto Covino at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies and Centre for Multiscale Modeling in the Life Sciences.

The project focuses on developing and applying an innovative computational framework that integrates artificial intelligence and physics-based computer simulations to study the formation of protein assemblies in cellular membranes. Self-assembly of proteins in cellular membranes is a fundamental process in biology. Understanding its biophysics and biological implications requires groundbreaking approaches, which you will advance. Your research will range across biophysics, artificial intelligence, physics, and high-performance computing. You will be embedded in a highly interdisciplinary environment and interact intensely with experimental collaborators to develop new quantitative models of fundamental biological systems.

Ideally, you have:
• A Master’s degree in theoretical and computational sciences (physics, biophysics, mathematics, computer science, or theoretical chemistry).
• Excellent communication skills and working proficiency in English.
• A strong interest in interdisciplinary research.
• Previous experience in programming (Python, etc.), biomolecular simulations (Gromacs, Namd), and machine learning (PyTorch, Tensorflow) are not required but a plus.

We offer:
• A highly inspiring work environment.
• Excellent research infrastructure and dedicated mentoring.
• Fully funded PhD, with a very competitive salary and social benefits.
• Excellent opportunities for training and career development. You will be affiliated to the Goethe-University and a fellow of the graduate school GRADE-iQbio.
• You will have the opportunity to live in Frankfurt am Main, a vibrant and exciting cosmopolitan city at the heart of Europe.

Applications may be submitted until August 20, 2020 but interviews will be scheduled as soon as possible. The successful applicant is expected to start in September 2020.

Required documents:
• A motivation letter, stressing why you want to do a PhD in the field and in our lab.
• A detailed curriculum vitae containing academic qualifications, research experiences, skills, possibly a publication list where you highlight your contribution.
• Name and contact information of at least one reference.
• Detailed transcripts of records of your Master’s and Bachelor’s programs.

Please upload all documents as a single pdf file at this link: https://pm.fias.science/projects/application.
