A PhD position addressing the environmental effects of nanoplastics in freshwater ecosystems is available in the School of Environment at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The position, funded by charitable donation, is associated with a large interdisciplinary project which examines the environmental effects of plastics across terrestrial, freshwater and marine systems. A key aim of the research is to determine which plastics have the greatest environmental effects so they can be prioritized for management. The project team includes researchers from multiple Universities and Research Institutes in New Zealand and Europe with a wide range of expertise in disciplines including polymer and environmental chemistry, ecology, molecular microbiology and social science. The PhD student will focus on defining the ecological effects and fate of nanoplastics in assays ranging from simple laboratory to more complex mesocosm experiments. Work will involve close collaboration with other PhD students on aligned projects.
Candidates with experience in ecological processes in freshwater systems, ecotoxicology and nanomaterials are preferred. Candidates should have a willingness and demonstrated ability to conduct field and laboratory experiments and learn analytical characterization techniques. The position can begin immediately and includes funds covering a stipend, university fees and operating costs.
