The PhD will focus on the investigation of a revolutionary new paradigm in designing highly optimised and adaptive communication systems that use various forms of machine learning techniques to adapt various functions of communications systems and networks within the context of emerging 5G systems.
While the traditional approaches in designing and implementing communication systems mostly rely on analytical and heuristic tools to analyse the functions of the system and design effective communication systems and networks, these approaches are often hindered by the sheer complexity the problem space as well as the stochastic nature of the environment (e.g., demand, channels, etc). A new breed of AI system, i.e., Deep Learning techniques have proven to be highly efficient in solving many problems that were impossible in the past due to the same type of problems. The aim of this research is to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of applying such solutions in a cross layer approach to design and adapt key parameters of both transceivers and networks, particularly in the context of large-scale V2X systems as an instantiation of massive machine type communication systems.
ELIGIBILITY We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the Intelligent Vehicles research group at WMG, University of Warwick with the following attributes:
• A minimum 2.1 undergraduate (BEng, MEng) and/or postgraduate masters’ qualification (MSc) in a science and technology field: Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science with specialisation in system level study of communication systems and networks • Familiarity with machine learning and probabilistic models • Relevant software knowledge and experience, for example Python and tensor frameworks (PyTorch or TensorFlow), C++, etc • Excellent analytical and numerical skills • A driven, professional and independent work attitude • Ability to liaise with academic supervisors from a range of disciplines • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
